Elvie

I'm one of the co-creators of the Elvie comic strip for Linux Voice. I'll soon be posting the strip from issue #1 onto our website, but in the meantime we've put together a "prequel" strip as a little introduction to the character, which can be found here:

http://peppertop.com/elvie/comic/000-introducing-elvie/

The Elvie strips are created entirely using FOSS applications: MyPaint, Inkscape and some editing work in The GIMP, all running on Linux Mint boxes. We intend to release all our source files under a CC-BY-SA licence, but because the MyPaint files can be pretty large we don't just want to upload them to our website. We're considering GitHub as a host, but if anyone has any other suggestions or ideas about hosting these files then I'd be pleased to hear them.

If anyone finds themselves in Aylesbury this Saturday, I'll be in Friars Square Shopping Centre as part of Free Comic Book Day, so pop along and say hello. Bring along your copy of Linux Voice and I'll dig out a free gift for you (it'll probably just be a signed Elvie print, so don't get too excited).

As the name of the day suggests there will also be free comic books available from mainstream publishers, plus other indie creators hawking their wares. But ours are the only ones created using FOSS!

Hah! I've just realised why she's called Elvie!

A Free (as in beer) Comin Book Day sounds pretty cool. A Free (as in freedom) Comic Book Day sounds even cooler :)

Elvie #001 - the strip from the first issue of Linux Voice - is now on our website. There's a Brazilian Portuguese translation, too.

The source files for this strip have also been put into our Github repository.

Elvie #002 - from LV #02 - is now online. The strip is based on a couple of items from the magazine: a tutorial about building an arcade machine using a Raspberry Pi, and an article about Grace Hopper.

The source files are also on our GitHub repository.

Glad to see you're paying attention. Her logo also changed from its usual "Linux Voice red" to "Elfin green". It seemed appropriate for a Nethack gag; she'll be back to her usual name and colours in issue #06.

You'll also notice a change to the frame borders in the first two panels - partly to suggest a dungeon-like stone wall, and partly to tie in with the "thought bubble" in the last panel, so indicate that the first two panels actually take place in her mind. Yes, I probably over-think these things sometimes ;)

Elvie #002 is now available in French, both on our website and in our Github repository:

(I suspect that this one loses a little something in translation, though)

The plop of a new copy of Linux Voice on the doorstep is my trigger to sort out the next Elvie strip to go online. Elvie #003 is now on our website and in our Github repository:
