Desktop Virtualisation - Group Test

Postby peejayLV » Wed Sep 14, 2016 1:50 pm

Stirred by the recommendation for Virtual Machine Manager (Issue 30) I opened up my terminal to reassure myself that my cpu was virtual machine ready.
I entered the suggested command
egrep -c ‘(svm|vmx)’ /proc/cpuinfo

and got the response:
bash: syntax error near unexpected token `('

Enthusiasm dashed! (temporarily). Is there an error in the command or is my machine displaying unusual behaviour?

Help welcome if at all possible.

Thank you otherwise for a consistently stimulating and informative magazine.

I changed the two quote marks for the inverted comma mark below the @ symbol on my British keyboard and tested it
Code: Select all
egrep -c '(svm|vmx)' /proc/cpuinfo

@matilda ~ $ egrep -c '(svm|vmx)' /proc/cpuinfo
0

which shows how ancient is my computer :?

The same command on my wife's computer shows

@miggins ~ $ egrep -c '(svm|vmx)' /proc/cpuinfo
2

I might just swap them over when she isn't looking ;-)

Thank you. I hadn't noticed that the difference between the single quote and the single inverted comma. In fact I'd just copied the text from the pdf so perhaps misled by a slightly fancier font than you get in the terminal.
Anyway, I now have a result : 2

so, @towy71, my enthusiasm is restored! Thank you.

Hi peejayLV,

From your posts it seems you are new to virtualisation. Have you had a chance to take VMM for a spin? Did it throw any more surprises? If it did, I'd also suggest you give VirtualBox a shot. In any case I'd love to know how you're getting along. It's virtually impossible for me to tell whether my Group Test recommendations would make sense to a new user, particularly for topics that are a bit geeky like Virtualisation, so your experience would be highly valuable.

Cheers!
